Shisha Pangma (8,027m / 26,335ft) is the 14th-highest mountain in the world and the only 8,000-meter peak located entirely within Tibet (China). Situated just north of the Nepal-Tibet border, this magnificent mountain marks the eastern end of the Himalayan chain and is often regarded as one of the most accessible 8,000-meter expeditions. Despite its reputation as one of the less technical 8,000ers, Shisha Pangma remains a serious high-altitude challenge requiring excellent physical fitness, careful acclimatization, and solid mountaineering experience.
The mountain's Tibetan name, Xixabangma (Shisha Pangma), is commonly translated as "The Mountain Above the Grassy Plains," while its traditional Sanskrit name, Gosainthan, means "The Holy Place." Its impressive 2,000-meter south face rises dramatically above the Tibetan Plateau, creating one of the most spectacular alpine landscapes in the Himalayas.
Shisha Pangma holds a unique place in mountaineering history as the last of the world's fourteen 8,000-meter peaks to be climbed. The first successful ascent was made on 2 May 1964 by a Chinese expedition led by Xu Jing, making it the only 8,000-meter summit first climbed exclusively by a Chinese team. Due to Tibet's restricted access, the mountain remained closed to foreign expeditions until 1980, when international climbers were finally permitted to explore its magnificent slopes.
Ultimate Himalaya's 33-Day Shisha Pangma Expedition follows the classic Northwest (Inaki) Route, beginning in Kathmandu before crossing into Tibet via the Kerung border. The journey gradually ascends through the vast Tibetan Plateau, allowing excellent acclimatization before reaching the Chinese Base Camp at 5,220m and Advance Base Camp at 5,400m.
Our expedition strategy emphasizes safe acclimatization through multiple rotations between the high camps before the summit push. Climbers establish Camp I (6,400m), Camp II (6,800m), and Camp III (7,450m), ensuring the body is well adapted to extreme altitude before attempting the summit. During the expedition, our experienced IFMGA/UIAGM-certified guides and elite high-altitude Sherpa team provide comprehensive logistical support, fixed ropes, weather forecasting, oxygen management, and safety supervision throughout the climb.
With decades of Himalayan expedition experience, Ultimate Himalaya delivers professionally organized expeditions that prioritize safety, personalized service, and the highest standards of expedition logistics, giving climbers the best possible opportunity to successfully stand atop the world's fourteenth-highest mountain.
